Abstract??This paper examined the psychometric properties of several subjective well-being(SWB) inventories and developed an inventory to measure the subjective well-being of Chinese citizens. Five studies were conducted. It was reported that the Chinese Happiness Inventory(Lu,2000) and Satisfaction with Life Scale(Diener,1985)had satisfactory psychometric properties among the Chinese citizens. A 54-items "inventory to measure the subjective well-being of Chinese citizens" was developed after the studies, and was proved to have satisfactory reliability and validity. The paper also examined the components of happiness among the Chinese citizens.

It was proved that except for ABS, SWLS?CHI and SHARP(after deleting one item of it) be apt to or help to measure subjective well-being of Chinese. It was also advised to develop a suitable scale to measure subjective well-being of Chinese citizens.

Abstract ??n this article, the author looked back on researches related to measurement of subjective well-being. The background, the progress and the trend in this research field were discussed. According to the author, measurement of subjective well-being could be traced back to measurement of happiness which was pursued by the western moralist and economist. The measurement of subjective well-being in present age was initiated by sociologist and psychologist. It was closely connected with the research of quality of life and psychological well-being. Many instruments to measure subjective well-being has been developed, and they mostly reflected this two types of indictors. Nowadays, various types of indicator became integrating, and many methods to measure subjective well-being were used.
