Background for the COMBI

The Center for Outcome Measurement in Brain Injury (COMBI) is a collaborative project of the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR), now the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR) funded Traumatic Brain Injury Model Systems. The COMBI is a project of the current funding cycle for NIDRR TBI Model Systems (2007-2012). The COMBI is coordinated at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.

TBI Model Systems Projects will contribute their scales and expertise to make the COMBI a valuable resource. Currently information has been provided by Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, The Institute for Rehabilitation Research, Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan, Ohio Regional TBI Model System, the Mayo Clinic (Minnesota), Medical College of Virginia, MossRehab TBI Model System, Philadelphia, University of Alabama at Birmingham Traumatic Brain Injury Care System, Craig Hospital in Englewood, Colorado, Methodist Rehabilitation Center,(Mississippi), Spaulding/Partners at Harvard Medical School, Carolinas Traumatic Brain Injury Rehabilitation and Research System at Charlotte Institute of Rehabilitation TBI Model Systems, the Mount Sinai School of Medicine (New York), JFK-Johnson Rehabilitation Institute (New Jersey), and the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana. Statistics articles for Outcome Oriented have been provided by Kessler Medical Rehabilitation Research and Education Corporation (New Jersey). Starting in 2006, scale information is also being accepted from outside the TBI Model Systems. The HiMAT instrument has been included from Epworth Rehabilitation in Victoria, Australia. The CB&M instrument has been included from Toronto Rehab in Ontario, Canada. The ILS instrument has been included from the Centre for Neuro Skills.

Since 1998 we have been adding new measures and scales.

The COMBI had a bulletin board system between 2000 and 2011. This was discontinued due to misuse (spam) and lack of posts. Existing questions and responses will be incorporated into the frequently asked question sections.

For each supported measure there is syllabus and training information, rating forms, background information on validity and reliability, a reference list of published studies, and testing materials. A FAQ (Frequently Asked Question) section is also included, compiled from past training information and questions emailed to us.

Starting in January 2012, COMBI has partnered with the Journal of Head Trauma Rehabilitation (JHTR) to provide a new JHTR feature called 'Tools for Clinical Use.' The recurring feature will include profiles and updates on validated, standardized instruments from the COMBI. JHTR readers will have regular updates of both existing scales and new additions to the COMBI.

We hope you find the COMBI a valuable resource. Please feel free to email us with suggestions or contributions. Contact Mr. Ben Dirlikov at
